The Alamo Mission, formerly known as Misión San Antonio de Valero, is best known for the legendary battle of March 6, 1836. On this day General Santa Anna's army of 1500 Mexican soldiers ended their 13 day siege and mercilessly defeated approximately 200 Texians then garrisoned at the Alamo. Just four days earlier Texas had declared it's independence, and the defeat at the Alamo rallied the territory under the cry of "Remember the Alamo!" 46 days later General Santa Anna and his army where defeated in just 18 minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto.
The Alamo is one of the most important historic sites in America and the most popular tourist destination in Texas. Today it's part of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site in downtown San Antonio, Texas.
