Joseph Hubertus Pilates published his first book, Your Health in 1934. He set forth "a corrective system of exercising that revolutionizes the entire field of physical education". Joe Pilates believed that every person could attain health, strength and happiness through Contrology – those corrective exercises with a focus toward a balance of mind and body.
In 1945 he published his second book, Return to Life Through Contrology. He reaffirmed the importance of breath and posture in every sedentary position as well as in movement. Joe also recognized the benefits of a good diet and proper sleep. It is in this book we are given detailed instructions on his Mat exercises.
In his own words: "With body, mind and spirit functioning perfectly as a coordinated whole, what else could reasonably be expected other than an active, alert, disciplined person?"
Joseph Pilates ideals are universal and timeless - his work continues to flourish today.
